Dr. Wendy Lane
Wendy Lane MD graduated magna cum laude from Yale
University in 1980 with degrees in biology and English
literature. She then attended Dartmouth Medical School,
and completed her internship and residency in internal
medicine at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Boston,
Massachusetts (Harvard Medical School). After practicing
internal medicine for 5 years in New Hampshire, she
completed a fellowship in endocrinology and diabetes at
Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine (University of
Vermont). She also completed a one year fellowship in
Pediatric Endocrinology. Dr. Lane has been in private
practice in Asheville, North Carolina since 1998.
She currently practices endocrinology and diabetes at
Mountain Diabetes and Endocrine Center with Dr. Stephen
Weinrib and Dr. Jonathan Rappaport. She is the director of
the center's clinical research unit. Dr. Lane's medical and
research interests include the use of insulin pumps in type-1
and type-2 diabetics. She is a pioneer in the use of U-500
insulin in pumps for patients with very high insulin
requirements/doses. She has published 3 studies in
nationally recognized journals and is frequently asked to
design and refine protocols for industry, as well as design
her own study protocols.
Dr. Stephen Weinrib
Stephen Weinrib MD graduated from Northwestern
University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He
then attended the University of Alabama Medical School
and completed his Internal Medicine and Primary Care
residency at George Washington University Medical
Center in 1995. He completed his Endocrinology
Fellowship at Lahey Clinic and his Diabetes Fellowship at
the Joslin Diabetes Center.
Dr. Weinrib has been in private practice for 5 years in
Alabama before beginning practice at Mountain Diabetes
and Endocrine Center in Asheville. His medical interests
include thyroid cancer treatment, including certification in
radioactive iodine therapy. Dr. Weinrib is the only
Endocrinologist in Western North Carolina licensed to
administer high-dose I-131 treatments. He also has
particular interests in insulin resistance, PCOS, and
prevention of diabetes and diabetic complications. He
speaks to patients, diabetic educators, the medical
industry, residents and physician groups on a local and
regional level to educate on practical approaches to the
care of the endocrine patient. He has been involved with
numerous clinic trials and is a primary clinical investigator
with our Diabetes Clinical Research Center.
Dr. Jonathan Rappaport
Jonathan Rappaport MD graduated magna cum laude
from Northeast Louisiana University (ULM) in 1994 with
degrees in Pre-Med and Chemistry. He studied for an
additional year in the Pharmacology/Toxicology PhD
program at ULM. Then he attended Louisiana State
Medical school in New Orleans and completed residency in
Internal Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-
Salem, North Carolina.
Dr. Rappaport practiced Internal Medicine for one year
and then completed his Endocrinology and Diabetes
fellowship at Tulane University. He has been practicing at
Mountain diabetes and Endocrine Center since 2006 along
with Drs. Wendy Lane and Stephen Weinrib. Dr.
RappaportŐs medical interests include the treatment of
thyroid diseases, including thyroid cancer as well as type-1
and type-2 diabetes. He is certified in thyroid ultrasound-
guided biopsy. His research interests are in diabetes,
metabolism and metabolic diseases with emphasis on
clinical research trials.
